Yolande Piazza_The Change AgentEpisode 73

Ever questioned why one of the biggest global banks would choose a 30 year bank veteran to be the CEO of their internal fintech program?  That’s exactly what Citi did when they selected Yolande Piazza to take over the Citi FinTech CEO role after Heather Cox moved on to USAA.  It’s so easy to knock this choice – but let me caution you on being quick to judge.  Take a few minutes to listen to and get to know Yolande Piazza and you’ll agree with me; she’s the perfect fit.

This was one of my favorite interviews so far, mainly due to Yo’s (her friends call her Yo) transparency and honesty about attempting to be an internal disruptor at a global bank.  It ain’t easy folks, but my money’s on Yo.

Natasha Kyprianides_FinTech Maestro_Episode 69

I’m always interested in the career arc of folks in the fintech space.  Natasha’s story is a great example of how much the financial services space is changing.  If you would have asked Natasha what she’d be doing for a career when she was young she would have said “Musician”.   Banker or technologist would have never, ever come to mind for her.

Fast forward a decade or so and Natasha is a highly recognized and respected digital banking innovator for Hellenic Bank.  As Robert Frost said “she took the path less traveled”.

Roberta Profeta_ Global Mentor_ Ep 65

Roberta Profeta goes by Robbie to her friends.  This pretty much includes everybody involved in the London FinTech scene.  Talk to just about anyone in Canary Wharf and they’ll have a story about Robbie.  She is an active mentor and also a strong voice for women in tech.

She also recommended The Machine Stops as a great read.  My copy of the book is on order.

Anne Boden_Rebel with a Cause_Episode_47

Anne could have easily chosen to take the well traveled path and continued her career as a top executive with any of the global banks.  After all she has already served as the COO for Allied Irish Bank, the Head of Global Transactions Services for RBSG, and as a senior executive for ABN Amro, UBS, and several other large scale banks.

Anne, instead, chose the path less traveled.  She is the founder and CEO of Starling Bank, one of the leading “neo” banks out of the UK.  She has assembled an outstanding team around her that matches her outstanding personality.  We are happy to call Anne a friend of the pod.

Neal Cross_Digital Banker_Episode-46

Neal is the modern definition of a “renaissance man”.  He is the Chief Innovation Officer for DBS, the banked named Digital Bank of the Year for 2016  by Euromoney.   Neal himself was recognized as the World’s Most Disruptive Chief Innovation Officer for 2016.  And Neal is also the founder of Hotel Orangutan, easily one of the coolest hotels you could possibly stay at in Indonesia.

Neal and his team at their offsite team meeting at Hotel Orangutan.

Dan Kimerling_Key Master_Episode-38

One of the hottest topics in the financial services industry is “Open Banking”.  While it is true the barbarians are at the gates, the reality is the gatekeepers at the banks need to provide access past their walls and unfortunately, this concept blows most bank executives’ minds.  That is where an expert at API development and working with 3rd parties is a most.  And that is exactly what Dan is – the Key Master.   Simple put – he is a genius.

And his wife’s company is also incredible: CampEats – Be sure to check it out.

Linda Duncombe__The Voice of the Customer_Episode 37

Linda wears many hats at Citi FinTech, as someone with her experience and passion for the customer should.  She is the Chief Marketing Officer and Managing Director – Head of Growth for Citi’s innovation team.  Or, as she puts it, she’s the voice-of-the-customer.  And what a fun voice to have on your side.

Linda combines her extensive experience implementing digital solutions for banking customers with a pragmatic and candid lens always focused on what consumers are really looking for from the bank when it comes to engagement and products.

And if you really want to get her talking, ask her about “disruption”.

John Hope Bryant_ Silver Rights Worker_ Ep 24

Sometimes your name is prophetic.  This is exactly the situation with John Hope Bryant.  He has exemplified the concept of ‘hope’ throughout his life and specifically with Operation Hope, his organization focused on financial literacy and dignity for all.  John is a best selling author, keynote speaker, has shared the stage with Archbishop Desmond Tutu for the closing keynote at Davos, has worked with President Bush and Obama on financial literacy programs, and most recently was honored as American Banker’s Innovator of the Year for 2016.

It was my honor to interview John and he has an avid follower and supporter in me going forward.

Bradley Leimer_Discerning Technologist_Episode-17

You know that one person that everyone seems to know, that no one has anything bad to say about, and who seems to know something about every topic in a given field?  This perfectly sums up my good friend Brad Leimer, the Head of FinTech Strategy for Santander Innovation.  Some of my most memorable one-on-one conversations have been with Brad.  This definitely comes across in this interview as does my admiration and love for this guy.

Brad’s blog, Discerning Technologist, is a must read as is his most popular post in American Banker on The Great Rebundling of Financial Services.

Neff Hudson_The Contrarian_ Episode-15

How many people do you know that have spent their entire professional career with one company and yet are considered a ‘disruptor’?  Meet Neff Hudson from USAA.  Not only does Neff have the coolest name in banking, he is also one of the coolest people in banking – thus the title of ‘The Contrarian’.   He is one of those hidden gems in the executive ranks of banking; someone who truly understands the complexities of banking and technology but is also a strong advocate for digital product adoption.
